Ordering Ammunition online in California isn't a direct process for most people. This page will help you simplify ordering to make your experience successful.
Note that by making the purchase of ammunition, the purchaser is agreeing to the store policies. This page goes into detail on the process of ordering.
YOU MUST FIRST FIND AN FFL OR AMMO VENDOR TO HAVE THE AMMO SENT TO FIRST, and review the cost of the ammo transfer on their website, as well as contacting the FFL or ammo vendor to determine if they will be available to receive your transfer.
If you don't have an FFL you are working with, click here to find one in your zip code and then call them.
STEPS TO COMPLETE THE AMMUNITION ORDER (SUCCESSFULLY):
1. After you have selected your desired ammunition in a caliber that matches that of a firearm you own and added it to the cart, provide details requested during order flow. This will be your name and address, such ID as is required to facilitate the transaction, and further information. If you have not added an FFL as shipping address, you will need to add a note in the order, or use the contact form on this website, to advise Gallagher Ammunition of the name of the FFL or CA Ammunition Vendor, and the physical address of the FFL or CA Ammunition Vendor where the ammunition will be sent to. (This must be an FFL or CA Ammunition Vendor that you have already communicated with so that you have confirmed they will perform ammunition transfers and are available to do so in the near future.)
2. The ammunition order will be held until Gallagher Ammunition can change the shipping address, if necessary, in the order (to an FFL or CA Ammunition Vendor address that you have specified and that both you and Gallagher Ammunition agree upon) before fulfilling it with a distributor. (If you have put your name and address in as the billing address, and the shipping address in the order as the name of the FFL or CA Ammo Vendor you have selected, Gallagher Ammunition must independently confirm that the shipping / destination address is a valid FFL or CA Ammunition Vendor address.)
While it is not necessary to do so since order paperwork contains reference to the person who has ordered the ammunition, some who order ammunition wish to make it expressly clear on the box who it is intended for. In that case, if you wish, use "care of" abbreviated as "c/o" in the ship-to address, as an example:
Jim AmmoPurchaser c/o Old Timey FFL, (Postal address of FFL follows), Somewheretown CA 93933
You can also just use the FFL address without your name (example):
Old Timey FFL, (Postal address of FFL follows), Somewheretown CA 93933
3. Gallagher Ammunition will obtain a copy of the license of the federal firearm licensee or of the ammunition vendor, and will provide this license copy to the distributor. The distributor will then complete the order process by sending the ammunition to the destination FFL or Ammunition Vendor.
4. There will be a tracking number sent and as soon as you get that, you should share that tracking number with your nearby selected FFL or Ammunition Vendor who will be receiving the ammunition. That way they know as well as you when it is inbound to their shop.
5. When you go into the shop to pick it up, you will need to do an instant background check to pick up the ammunition. While this (along with other ammunition requirements in California) are being contested in court, they stil are in effect. Therefore you'll need to bring your ID to do the pickup.
Long story short: In California, with few exceptions (such as if you are an FFL03 with COE or an Ammunition Vendor), you need to have ammunition shipped to a willing FFL or Ammunition Vendor so you can pick it up in person.
So that much is done, but what if you have a problem with getting your instant background check cleared (as some people have run into hangups with the background system, even if they've cleared it before)?
Here's an article on how to address that issue.
If you are trying to create or update a CFARS account with CA Department of Justice in order to update your information to address a records issue (to help you clear the instant background check), go here.

IDENTITY DOCUMENT(S):
If your license says “Federal limits apply” in the upper right-hand corner, you must also present one other document proving you are in the United States legally. Accepted documents are a valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card; a certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate; a U.S. Certificate or Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen; a valid, unexpired foreign passport with valid U.S. immigrant visa and approved Record of Arrival/Departure (I-94) form; a certified copy of birth certificate from a U.S. Territory; a Certificate of Naturalization or U.S. Citizenship; a valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card. If your name is different on these documents than it is on your ID, additional documents concerning your name change will be required.
Note: You can also go to the DMV and get a REAL ID, which requires additional documentation and a fee, but then you won’t be required to take the other documents to buy ammunition in the future.
